The Great West Coast Road Trip: Day 6 - Big Sur and Paso Robles

Monday, September 16, 2013

We didn't want to leave Treebones.  We tried to stay another night, but they were booked solid.  After breakfast, where you stirred your coffee with an uncooked noodle (great idea to reduce waste!), we suited up in our hiking gear and headed to Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park to see McWay Falls.  This is probably the most photographed spot in Big Sur, with an 80-foot waterfall plummeting to the sandy beach below.

Don't we look like authentic hikers?

The "hike" to McWay Falls was, like, .5 miles round trip, and we were hoping to do more.  So we found some other trails that lead through the tall redwoods.

But after a while, we couldn't get the meal at Treebones out of our heads, so we drove back there to get lunch before it closed.  We had to race!  But with a handful of minutes to spare, we made it!

We drove the rest of Big Sur, and stopped at an Elephant Seal Rookery.  These guys were just hanging out.  These are just regular seals; what you can't see are are the gargantuan behemoth fat daddy elephant seals that were the size of 3 of these put together!  They were all in the water protecting their turf, and I didn't get a real shot of them.  It was funny watching them move on land, with just flippers.  They launched their body forward, and their tail followed, their blubber moving in waves.

Our next stop was Paso Robles, a detour inland from the Pacific Coastal Highway.  We had come here for Chris' and Tom's wedding a couple of years ago, and had a wonderful time.  We ate so well at Thomas Hill Organics, that we just had to go back.

After dinner, we went back to the hotel and, you guessed it, got in the hot tub.  Life is wonderful!
