The Great West Coast Road Trip: Day 3 - Portland

Return visit to Mother's.  Hey, if it ain't broke!  John got the tofu hash again, and I tried the french toast.  Breaded with cornflakes and baked until crispy...I definitely scored on this one.

A realtor can never really go on vacation.  I had to tend to some business for the rest of the morning.  John was just fine with that.  He streamed Battlestar Galactica on his iPad.  At first he was watching the 1978 series, but I caught him starting again from episode 1 of the 2000's series.  Addict!

Went out for lunch at another restaurant Ryan Jones recommended: Los Gorditos (translation: The Fatties).  I can see why it's named that; look at these plates!

After stuffing our faces, we drove to the Hoyt Arboretum.  It's a 187 acre park sitting high up in the hills of Portland.  We went for a walk on one of their many trails, but weren't prepared for their 12 miles of hiking trails.  We decided to do the rest by car, and drove around the neighborhoods surrounding the park.  The houses were SO COOL!  They were each so different.  You'd have a historic craftsman bungalow right next to a modern house with glass walls.  They were built into the mountainside, and some stood on stilts and had cantilevered decks to enjoy the views of the city below. Here's one that I called the Hobbit house.

Check out those spider web windows!

After that, we didn't have anything planned, so we just drove around.  We saw a sign for the Pittock Mansion, so we decided, why not?  We lucked out because this spontaneous moment landed us the best view of the city.

On our last day of Portland, I wanted to visit some of the cool shops I had read about on the blog, Young House Love.  Schoolhouse Electric had some awesome pieces, but many of the things I liked were way too expensive, and nothing seemed to be on sale!

Rejuvenation is a store that sells salvage and reproduction historic furniture, hardware, and lighting.  Of course I loved it!  I want everything in there.

Vintage Signs

This reminded me of the eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg from The Great Gatsby

We had dinner reservations, but were a bit early arriving to the neighborhood, so we stopped in for a drink at Apex Beer Garden.  Portland is known for their breweries, and this spot had a ton of local beers on draught.

A very fun atmosphere (they had gnomes everywhere...my kind of place).  And check out the portrait of Yoda.

We sat at one of the many communal tables and just enjoyed the gorgeous weather.

Across the street, right next to a tattoo shop, we were in good spirits (get it? good spirits as in alcohol?  yes, I know I'm a dork) for our dinner at yet another Ryan Jones recommend eatery -- Portobello.

Did you think we were done eating?  Oh no.  Later that night around 9:45 pm, we walked from our hotel to Veggie Grill for a second round of vegan buffalo wings.  Then we popped open the bottle of champagne the hotel had given us as an anniversary gift and drank a glass next to one of their courtyard firepits.  Little did I know that the firepit area actually belonged to the restaurant attached the hotel, and we got busted for bringing "outside" alcohol to the restaurant.  Oops!
